Why psychotherapy?

I understand that the idea of spending time with a stranger and talking to them about life’s challenges, your worries and fears, can feel daunting. It may be that you feel there is something about your life you would like to change, or something you need help with but you can’t quite put your finger on it. There are many reasons why it is beneficial to talk to someone in therapy or counselling who at the start, knows nothing about you. You can talk in confidence, without judgement, and explore what doesn’t feel right. Spending time with a therapist will help you explore the issues you face and find solutions. Together, through the therapeutic relationship, we will help you understand yourself, or your situation, more deeply.

I chose to study Relational Integrative Psychotherapy because it allows me to draw upon a range of models that help to understand human behaviour, and also places significant importance on the therapeutic relationship, between therapist and client.

Therapy helps you to explore why you do the things you do, and with awareness, you can choose to continue in this way, or work towards change. You will not be alone in this endeavour, my role is be alongside you through this process.

I am enrolled on the four year Relational Integrative Psychotherapy diploma at Scarborough Counselling and Psychotherapy Training Institute. I am a member of, and working towards accreditation with, UKCP I read Applied Psychology at university and have always been interested in the wonder of the human mind and human behaviour. I have experience working within mental health settings and have previously taken a number of mental health related courses, including Mental Health First Aid and Suicide Awareness training. I recently completed Infant Loss training with the Foundation for Infant Loss.

I live in North Yorkshire, and have professional experience in various sectors - hospitality, training, sales, charity, event management, tourism and outdoor pursuits. I have worked in the rural community for many years, and understand some of the challenges that people face who live and work in this beautiful and sometimes isolating environment. I also have decades of lived experience of the Armed Forces community, from a few different perspectives.

I understand the pressure we put on ourselves to put on a brave face and keep going. At some point our bodies and minds tell us to stop. I would like to encourage people to come to therapy before that happens. We know ourselves better than anyone, and if we are truthful and give ourselves space, we can recognise when it is time to ask for help, something there should be no shame in.

About me

Appointments

You may not have had therapy before, so it may be helpful for me to share with you some of the practical information.

I hire the Music Room in the Happy House in Masham as our therapy space. The room is in the Art Gallery building at 24 Market Place.

My fee is £40 for 50 minutes. This rate reflects my trainee status and hire of the therapy space.

Sessions are currently available on weekdays and evenings and are usually weekly for 50 minutes each session. I have some flexibility to meet your needs so please contact me if you would like to discuss alternative arrangements.

I offer a free 15 minute telephone call as a first point of contact. If you would like to book a session we can look at what is bringing you to therapy in more detail. At this point you are under no obligation to return if you feel that this arrangement is not right for you. If you decide to continue, we will contract for further sessions, and would usually look ahead two months at a time. There is no expectation to pay for a cancelled appointment if you give 48 hours notice or more.

All personal information you disclose in a session is confidential, and will not be passed on to anyone else. The only exceptions would be if I felt that you, or someone else was in danger, or if information was required by a court. A therapist may discuss issues raised in therapy during supervision, but the client remains anonymous.

Contact me

Drop me a line with any questions you may have, in confidence, and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Please tell me if there is a specific method of communication you would prefer, and if that is a telephone call, whether I may leave a voice message for you.

I care about your privacy and aim to treat your personal information with confidentiality, care and respect.
